And then since then, I think you bought a CryptoPunk. You did a number of podcasts. I I saw on stablecoins. I think one of your wallets" }, { "i": 10, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "was docked. There was a lot of things that happened since then. Are you still focused on the app layer? I'm still focused on app layer. Like Webvan went out of business, yeah, but actually now we have Instacart and all the rest. But the other thing, and that's part of buying a" }, { "i": 15, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "CryptoPunk, is I started thinking a lot I've been spending a huge amount of time on AI." }, { "i": 16, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "Um you know, kind of co-founded a couple of AI companies including one trying to cure cancer, and I've been thinking about what AI and agents mean for everything." }, { "i": 17, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "And one of the things I went, oh, wait a minute." }, { "i": 18, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "This is going to be another important thing within crypto. So you buy you buy a CryptoPunk because you were thinking about sort of the network effect of community. What what were the areas you were you were interested in?" }, { "i": 31, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": ">> Well, so precisely one of the things that I think is interesting is if you say that the entire world of work changes because of agents and uh and the fact that you might have agents that are" }, { "i": 32, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "like your not just your talent agent, but also and scheduling agent, but also doing various kind of predictive productive work, but we still have this kind of super agency of humans doing" }, { "i": 33, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "that, well, what does that a whole identity ecosystem look like? And that identity ecosystem, while there'll be important identity ecosystems within the companies, like it's going to be kind of free-range" }, { "i": 34, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "on the internet. And how does that work?" }, { "i": 35, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "And crypto's the obvious answer. But that started getting me thinking about it. Then of course, you know, part of the thing that was very clever about CryptoPunks NFTs was like" }, { "i": 38, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "profile pictures, online identity. And then, you know, I met the CryptoPunks founders. They're great, you know, and then I was like, okay, I should I should buy a CryptoPunk. I should start, you" }, { "i": 39, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "know, getting cuz I always think you should get your hands into it when you're trying to learn, right? And so it was like one of the ways to try to learn." }, { "i": 40, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": ">> I think about your career, and you know, we go back to PayPal, money on the internet. We think about LinkedIn, identity on the internet. And is this really me given that I've also made Reed AI, and I put Reed AI to speak at various conferences and so forth." }, { "i": 50, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "And um I think that part of that provenance, part of that, okay, this is, you know, certified, and what which which uh and how do you have, you know, part of the reason why, for example, crypto" }, { "i": 51, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "networks is certification authority being done in a very deep way. I mean, when I bought my first uh Bitcoin in 2014, and by the way, I haven't sold any since then. I'm a believer in in all crypto. This is how identity should be working generally when you get to the internet. In terms of in terms of how it's going. And all of that, crypto is the the technological solution. Right? And it's the natural kind of uh and it's part of the reason why like the the deeper" }, { "i": 56, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "identity and trust questions. Yes, of course, identity trust really critical for financial." }, { "i": 57, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "But it's critical for many things in addition to financial." }, { "i": 58, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": ">> I want to pull on that. You know better than most people about social networks and their business models." }, { "i": 59, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "It feels like, you know, if you're on X today, if you're on Instagram today, you're seeing a lot of AI-generated content, you're seeing a lot of people who are creating, you know, whether it's" }, { "i": 60, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "political figures or OnlyFans models. Right? Like all it's it's the entire spectrum. And the idea of proof of humanity seems more important than ever today, but I also wonder, you know, is that just against" }, { "i": 61, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "the social business model?" }, { "i": 62, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": ">> Well, it's not against every social business model. I mean, as you know, LinkedIn, etc. And part of it is I think that it's part of the reason why one of the things that I had the earliest" }, { "i": 63, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "kind of discussions, you know, when we started, you know, kind of web two, was why actual real identity matters." }, { "i": 64, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "Because we want to know. And by the way, there there's legitimate claims for some areas where you want to have pseudonyms." }, { "i": 65, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "But your actual identity then creates more responsibility, more reliability when you're functioning within a Western society, even though we have, you know, some problems." }, { "i": 66, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "You know, in Western society and also generally, but like it's one of the things that I I've always been a strong believer." }, { "i": 67, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "And that's part of the reason why I think when you look at the critiques that, you know, kind of like whether it's, you know, a lot of misinformation and a bunch of other things that social" }, { "i": 68, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "networks get, LinkedIn gets a lot less of them >> Correct." }, { "i": 69, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": ">> because of that. So, so I do think that it's important to bring back kind of questions around where do we need to have robust senses of identity and that those robust senses of identity then lead to trustable" }, { "i": 70, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "information. And you know, for example, you know, in markets, like if someone were to say, you know, suddenly like, \"Oh, X has happened.\" Well, you actually really need to know if X has happened." }, { "i": 71, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "Um now, and I think part of the question around information is um is not only do we need to say did is this a source of trustable information, but like for example, let's take like" }, { "i": 72, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "one thing that's frequently quoted in media like polls." }, { "i": 73, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": ">> Mhm." }, { "i": 74, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": ">> Well, are these polls >> Mhm." }, { "i": 75, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": ">> genuine? Are they run well? Are the people answering them? I mean, how do you know like for example, it's even as like well, not may not just be AI bot farms, but how do you know it's not like" }, { "i": 76, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "a bunch of people being paid for it?" }, { "i": 77, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "Like this was one of the funniest things that we saw on on X, which is for like a small number of hours, they started posting the actual locations. And then a whole bunch of people who were tweeting" }, { "i": 78, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "MAGA influencer stuff were based in Nigeria and were doing it for economic reasons. Then of course, they took that down. Right? So, like that kind of identity really, really matters." }, { "i": 79, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": ">> I I want to talk about the political sphere for a second. You know, the the Genies Act has signed, Clarity looks like it's about to pass. You've been very bullish on stablecoins as based on" }, { "i": 80, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "our conversations." }, { "i": 81, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "Is now the moment when we should sort of take the partisanship out of technology, especially in crypto?" }, { "i": 82, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": ">> Well, I think it would be wise on lots of levels cuz as you know from our conversations, I actually think that the key question, you may have challenges to what's going on in crypto, but you" }, { "i": 83, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "should try to shape it to what is good, not just go \"Eh.\" That was one of the problems with like earlier, you know, administrations and approaches is what's good about Genies, about clarity for" }, { "i": 84, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "doing this. Um but if the industry goes, \"Oh, we're overly reacting against Gensler, etc.\" and then being kind of as it were anti-Democratic Party on this, the problem is is that the pendulum" }, { "i": 85, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "swings, right? And it's good to be bipartisan from a viewpoint of what we care about is the ecosystem. We care about how it plays a good role in society, and if you overly locate within" }, { "i": 86, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "one partisan group, like it was like, \"Oh, we got to make sure that, you know, all the MAGA Republicans are really on our side.\" Well, that works for now, but then when it turns around, it's like," }, { "i": 87, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "\"Well, that's what you were doing.\"" }, { "i": 88, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "versus what you were trying to do was build a really important part of our financial ecosystem. That's what's That's what actually, in fact, we should be focused on. So, I think it's it's" }, { "i": 89, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "good to be, you know, especially looking at what's likely to happen in the midterms, to be much more uh bipartisan partisan anyway. I want to switch to AI. I know you have a lot of thoughts about this. Um um I was reminded this morning about a conversation that I I listened to with Geoffrey Hinton, who talked" }, { "i": 92, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "about the Industrial Revolution sort of changed the physiology of humans. We didn't need need our muscles as much. Then the Information Revolution comes in, and really our brains become" }, { "i": 93, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "the most important thing." }, { "i": 94, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "Um you mentioned the idea of the sort of AI being this cognitive information cognitive industrial revolution, I I believe is your words." }, { "i": 95, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": ">> Yes." }, { "i": 96, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": ">> Um what does it mean to sort of give over some of our like deep thinking to the these machines?" }, { "i": 97, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": ">> So, you know, it's a little bit like, for example, um you know, people have been now predicting for a bit that there will be no software engineer. And actually in fact that's not true, but what is true" }, { "i": 98, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "is what's going to happen is like for example, like the the rote thing of learning how to use Rust, Pearl, you know, C++, Objective-C, etc." }, { "i": 99, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "All of that stuff will be easily available. And I think that's the right way to to think about it. And of course, you know, one of the things that can happen is, you know, if" }, { "i": 104, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "people haven't done this, they should go do this. Go use the frontier models for something that's really seriously matters to you. And like for example, for me as an investor, I find it's" }, { "i": 105, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "really really helpful in doing competitive analysis, due diligence, etc. But if I if I tell it, well, should I make the investment or not, it gives me what I think of as the the bad" }, { "i": 106, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "business school answer, which is a really smart business professor who can sound really good and who would lose money as a private placement tech investor cuz that doesn't actually" }, { "i": 107, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "understand how the game works. And so that's the reason why I'm not I'm not worried about, oh, we're giving over our cognitive facilities. Now, people can still sometimes do that. Like you can go" }, { "i": 108, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "to Google and say, you know, should I take Hydroxychloroquine as a as a vaccine against, you know, COVID and then do it, you're like, okay, that's a mistake, don't do that, but engage." }, { "i": 109, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "You know, I was talking to Brad Garlinghouse yesterday and we were talking about how the narrative around sort of the tech companies uh starting to do layoffs because of AI." }, { "i": 110, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "And he, you know, he was really like I I've hired an amazing team. A lot of big tech companies have hired these amazing teams. He's like, I really just want to empower them to be superheroes." }, { "i": 111, "speaker": "Speaker 2", "text": "So, you know, it sounds like what you're saying is find those those intersections where the machine can do the thing better for you or it's the repetitive task and really use your brain even" }, { "i": 112, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "more." }, { "i": 113, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": ">> Yes. Like the the the real business sustaining business advantage is not going to be a cost advantage. It's how do I use it for go to market, product development, iteration for for customers, depth of of tech stack. Now, it's easy to much easier to build these kind of SaaS softwares. But, that means that's the new competitive minimum bar in terms of what you're doing. And so, um I actually" }, { "i": 120, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "think that what we've see I've seen so far and every company said, I'm doing layoffs because of AI, maybe other than Meta, right? Is um is not out of productivity, but is just out of reshifting like, oh," }, { "i": 121, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "we've over-hired because of the pandemic. We need to change. We're going to call it AI for a position of strength, but we're not actually in fact um that's actually not not happening. We have a lot of people here that are builders who probably would love to to get an investment from you. So, and that includes like funny fun things. Like, I don't know if you saw that I released a Pi Day music video of me singing. And so, um, and so that kind of like where all the areas where there's" }, { "i": 133, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "enduring value cuz, you know, part of being a venture investor is you look to invest in things that that you would essentially kind of hold forever. That means you have a 5 to 10-year plus," }, { "i": 134, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "you're not timing a market, you're not doing anything as part of that. And I think that part of that has gotten me back into we're going to need like what are the things when you have agents" }, { "i": 135, "speaker": "Speaker 1", "text": "everywhere? What are the things you're going to need to have? One of them is identity. That's one of the reasons why for, you know, NFTs and crypto and I was partially thinking about that.
